CRAMER STATEMENT ON REINSTATING IRAN SANCTIONS
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kevin Cramer issued the following statement after President Trump announced the United States would reinstate sanctions on Iran.
The United States will reimpose sanctions on Iran’s automotive sector, trade in gold, graphite, aluminum, steel, and coal, and also outlaw the purchase of Iran’s sovereign debt beginning August 7. On November 5, the remaining sanctions on the energy and petroleum sectors will be imposed. These sanctions were lifted in 2015 when the Obama Administration signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“Iran continues to be a major sponsor of terrorism and its increasingly aggressive hardline Revolutionary Guard has tightened its grip on much of the country’s industry. Iran has proven why the Iran Nuclear Deal was a bad agreement in the first place. After receiving billions of dollars and access to world oil markets, Iran has continued funding multiple terrorist organizations, enriching uranium, and developing its missile technology. Since it is too late to get back the money the Obama Administration and Senate Democrats pumped into Iran’s economy, I support President Trump’s decisions to reimpose strong sanctions.”
