Cramer Congratulates Grand Forks on Earning Great American Defense Communities Honors
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kevin Cramer congratulated the City of Grand Forks today for being named a Great American Defense Community by the Association of Defense Communities and Defense Communities Caucus. This initiative began last year and is designed to acknowledge the unique contributions cities, counties and regions that host installations make to improve quality of life for service members, veterans and their families.
“It is more important than ever our military retains highly trained airmen,” said Cramer. “Communities that welcome our military and offer such a positive quality of life are vital when we discuss retention. Grand Forks continues to lead by example in this regard.”
Cramer wrote a letter in support of the Grand Forks community being awarded this distinction by the Association of Defense Communities earlier this year. View the letter here.
The 10 communities were selected by a panel of defense community advocates and experts from dozens of nominees based on the broad range of efforts they carry out on behalf of military personnel and their families, covering areas such as education, job opportunities, housing, family support during deployments and community appreciation.
Joining Grand Forks as a member of the inaugural class of honorees are:
- Colorado Springs, Colo.
- Dayton, Ohio
- Leonard Wood, Mo.
- Goldsboro, N.C.
- Lawton, Okla.
- Manhattan, Kan.
- Monterey, Calif.
- Okaloosa County, Fla.
- South Puget Sound, Wash.
This year’s class will be recognized throughout 2016 at a variety of events in Washington, D.C., including an exhibit and reception on Capitol Hill.
