Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Bud Cramer (Ala.-05) today joined millions of Americans in celebrating National Teacher Day (May 6) and Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4 – 10), a time for honoring educators and acknowledging the contributions they make to the lives of our children.
“It is so important that we stop to thank our teachers for their guidance, and the tremendous effect they have on our youth by inspiring and encouraging them to learn,” Cramer said. “In my district, the talented teachers are one reason why our community continues to be such a great place to live, work and raise a family.”
Last month, the Alabama Department of Education named four finalists for the 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year, including the Fifth District’s Lawana Welt, a teacher of Language Arts at Liberty Middle School in Madison. The winner will be announced later this week.
“Mrs. Welt is a shining example of the many Fifth District teachers who are building the academic foundation that will help our students achieve numerous goals throughout their lives,” Cramer said. “I thank her for her commitment to teaching and wish her the best as the Teacher of the Year winner is announced on Wednesday.”
Other Fifth District teachers who were named as Top 16 Finalists include Stephanie Singleton, first grade teacher at Harlan Elementary in Florence, and Amanda Evans, third grade teacher at Columbia Elementary in Madison.
