U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer (D-Ala.) will host the annual Military Academy Day for all high school students in Alabama's Fifth Congressional District Sunday September 14th in Madison. Cramer is inviting students, families and guidance counselors to come to learn about the requirements and procedures for attending one of the U.S. military academies.
The event will take place Sunday afternoon, September 14th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Madison Academy Cafeteria. Madison Academy is located at 325 Slaughter Road in Madison.
At Cramer's invitation, representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will attend. The academy representatives will answer questions and distribute information about their respective institutions.
A member of Congress can nominate students to attend an academy if the students meet the eligibility requirements and live in the representative's congressional district. Alabama's Fifth Congressional District includes all or part of Colbert, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, and Morgan Counties. Since coming to Congress in 1991, 67 young men and women have received appointments to military academies.
"The academies offer young men and women the opportunities to get an excellent education and serve their country," said Cramer. "These are outstanding institutions that help develop young people morally, mentally and physically. They help instill the highest ideals of duty and honor."
"I hope this event will help students who are interested in attending a service academy learn more about the application process and the opportunities that academies offer," continued Cramer. "Our past Academy Days have been very successful."
