Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer (D-Ala.) announced that the Colbert County Commission has been selected for a $75,000 federal homeland security grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). CNCS is offering these grants to encourage and strengthen community efforts for homeland security.
"I am pleased to announce that the Colbert County Commission has received $75,000 for Homeland Security," said Cramer. "With this grant, 200 RSVP volunteers will be able to partner with Northwest Alabama law enforcement officers, fire departments, emergency management services, the health department, TVA, and the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport in order to increase community awareness about homeland security. Getting the community involved is essential for protecting our homeland, and I'm proud of the people of North Alabama for their efforts to ensure our homeland security."
The Homeland Security projects supported by these funds should begin operation this fall. The Colbert County Commission's programs will include a group of volunteers assisting 7 law enforcement agencies to reduce crime, implement new homeland security strategies, and increase volunteerism. A small group of volunteers will assist the Northwest Alabama Regional Airport in providing information to passengers and guests as well as aiding the media and passengers during disaster response, thus increasing passenger safety and freeing up airport personnel. Additionally, groups of volunteers will organize fire safety programs and inspect equipment resulting in enhanced community awareness of fire safety and more regular inspection of equipment.
Cramer added, "I'm pleased that CNCS is responding to President Bush's call for citizens to get involved in local efforts to secure our homeland. RSVP volunteers in Colbert County have a lot to add to these efforts, and I'm pleased they are receiving this funding."
