SUGGESTED WASHINGTON D.C. SITES

Arlington National Cemetary - Open daily October through March from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and April through September from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Amphitheater, the Custis-Lee Mansion and the graves of Presidents John F. Kennedy and William Howard Taft. Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier every hour on the hour and every half hour in the summer months. Bureau of Engraving and Printing
 - 14th and C Streets, SW. See how U.S. Currency is printed. Tours Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Closed weekends, Federal holidays, and December 24 through January 4. Phone:(202) 622-2000. Metro Stop: Smithsonian.

Corcoran Gallery of Art - 17th St. and New York Ave. Metro Stop: Farragut West/North. Open everyday except Tuesdays from 10:00 am - 4:30 pm and Thursday evenings until 9 pm. Phone (202) 639-1700.

Ford's Theatre and Lincoln Museum - 10th Street between E and F Streets, NW. Building is open every day of the year except December 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone:(202) 426-6924. Metro Stop: Metro Center.

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial - The FDR Memorial site in Washington is located at one of the points designated for such a monument by the 1901 McMillan Plan. Visitors moving through the Memorial will be constantly aware of the other three monuments, thus experiencing not only a profound sense of President Roosevelt and his great contributions to humanity, but also a deep sense of the historic continuity of the American nation. Encompassing over seven seven acres, the FDR Memorial is situated between the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, near the famous Cherry Tree Walk on the Tidal Basin. The Memorial creates a park-like sequence of four outdoor galleries, each depicting a term of FDR's time in office. The memorial is open from 10:00 am-5:30 pm.

The Freer Gallery - a gift to the Smithsonian Institution, this museum features Far and Near East art works, some dating back 2,000 years. 12th Street, SW. at Jefferson Drive. Open 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone: (202) 357-2700. Metro Stop: Smithsonian.

Georgetown - The oldest section of Washington is home to many attractions, including the C & O Canal National Historic Park. From April to September, the National Park Service operates mule-pulled canal boats along the canal from both Georgetown and nearby Great Falls, MD. Between 30th and Thomas Jefferson Streets N.W., 1/2 block below M Street.

The Hirschhorn Mueseum and Sculpture Garden - 7th Street and Independence Avenue, SW. Filled with art from all over the world, the Hirshhorn features contemporary painting and sculpture from the past 125 years. Hours daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone (202) 357-2700. Metro Stop: Archives.

Holocaust Memorial Museum - Open daily except December 25 and Yom Kippur from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The museum is located at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW (Old 15th Street, SW, between Maine Ave. and Independence Ave.) Tickets are available in limited quantity on a first-come, first-serve basis. Allow at least two hours to visit the museum. Phone: (202) 488-0400. Metro Stop: Smithsonian.

Jefferson Memorial 
- South Bank of the Tidal Basin. Open 24 hours daily. At the Swan Boathouse you can rent a pedal boat to cruise the Basin. Metro Stop: Smithsonian.

John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts - Free Tours are given at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  Reservations are only needed for groups containing 20 or more.  For more information please calll the Kennedy Center Visitors Center at 202-416-8340, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily.

Library of Congress - Jefferson Building, First Street and Independence Avenue, SE. Tours offered Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. The Library asks that groups of over 10 people make a reservation for a specific tour. Phone: (202) 707-5458. Metro Stop: Capitol South.

Lincoln Memorial - West Potomac Park at the foot of 23rd Street, NW. Open 24 hours daily. Metro Stop: Foggy Bottom.

Mount Vernon - Home of George Washington. Open to the public daily from 9:00 am-5:00 pm, March - October. Open November-February 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Admission: Adults-$9.00; Senior Citizens-$4.00; Children 6-11 years-$4.50; 5 and under - Free. Phone (703) 780-2000.

The Museum of African Art - The newest of the Smithsonian museums, it has in its possession the finest American collection of African, as well as American art influenced by African styles, 950 Independence Avenue, SW. Tours are available during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone: (202) 357-2700. Metro Stop: Smithsonian.

Museum of Air and Space - 6th and Independence Avenue, SW. The world's most popular museum, displaying the Wright brother's plane, The Spirit of St. Louis, the Apollo II command module and several other interesting exhibits. IMAX films including THE DREAM IS ALIVE, BLUE PLANET, LIVING PLANET, and, TO FLY shown daily from 10:15 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. at 40 minute intervals. Phone: (202) 357-1686.

Museum of American History - 14th and Constitution Avenue, NW. Highlights include the First Ladies' gowns, George Washington's uniform and tent, and milestones of American invention: Bell's telephone, Ford's Model T and Whitney's model of the original cotton gin.

Museum of Arts and Industries9th and Jefferson Drive, SW. The dynamic spirit of America 100 years ago is recaptured in this, the second oldest Smithsonian building on the Mall. It was used for President James Garfield's inaugural ball in 1881 and today houses "1876: A Centennial Exhibition."

Museum of Natural History - 10th and Constitution Avenue, NW. Visitors can learn about glaciers and Ice Age mammals. Exhibits range in size from the mounted African bush elephant, dinosaur skeletons, and the 92-foot model of a blue whale to the Hope Diamond and the bones of a tiny pocket mouse.

National Archives - 8th and Constitution Avenue, NW. See the original Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Phone (202) 501-5000. Metro Stop: Archive.

National Aquarium - 14th Street between Constitution Avenue and D Street, NW. Tanks of fish, frogs, alligators, sharks, and more. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except Christmas. Admission: Adults-$3.00, Senior Citizens and children under 12-$.75 cents. Phone: (202) 482-2825. Metro Stop: Federal Triangle.

National Cathedral - The Cathedral is open to the public daily from 10 am-4:30 pm. On weeknights during the summer (May 1 -Labor Day), the main floor remains open to the public until 9 pm. (Tours are not offered during those extended hours but our volunteers are on hand to answer your questions.) You are welcome to stop in during our public hours and tour on your own (Religious Service Schedule permitting). Information on guided tours is below.
Touring Hours Guided tours by trained docents are available to the public during these hours: Monday-Saturday 10:00 am-11:30 am; 12:45 pm-3:15 pm. Sunday following 11am service; approx. 12:00 pm-2:45 pm. No tours during services and special events. No guided tours on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Palm Sunday, Good Fri. afternoon or Easter. Tours are available on a walk-in or scheduled basis.

National Collection of Fine Arts - This museum celebrates American art from the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. Your favorite American artist surely has paintings hanging on the walls of this beautiful building. 8th and F Street, NW. Phone: (202) 357-2700.

The National Gallery of Art - Constitution Avenue between 3rd and 7th Streets N.W.. The main building and I.M. Pei's magnificent east building house the nation's art treasures and are connected by an underground concourse. Open daily 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone (202) 737-4215. Metro Stop: Archives.

National Zoo - 3001 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Grounds open daily. Winter: Mid-September to Mid April 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (animal buildings close at 4:30); Summer: Mid-April to Mid-September 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (animal buildings close at 6:00 p.m.) Animal buildings are open daily. The Pentagon - Located across the 14th Street Bridge in Virginia. Open Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Closed on Federal holidays. Hour-long tours start every half hour beginning by the ticket window at the north end of the concourse. Reservations are required for groups of 15 or more. Follow the signs for Visitors Parking. The Renwick Gallery - 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. This Smithsonian museum emphasizes American crafts and decorative art. Make sure to see the opulent upstairs rooms which were modeled after the Louvre in Paris. Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Phone: (202) 357-2532. Metro Stop: Farragut West or Farragut North.

The Smithsonian Building - 10 and Jefferson Drive, SW. To many visitors, this building - popularly known as the Castle - symbolizes the entire Smithsonian. It was the institution's first building. Today it houses the Visitor Information Center. ***All of the Smithsonian Museums are open daily 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day and 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. the rest of the year.

The State Department - 2201 C Street, NW. Tours are conducted on Monday through Friday at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 2:45 p.m. Tours are by reservation only. Limited Congressional tours available with 6 to 8 weeks advance notice. Phone: (202) 647-3241. Metro Stop: Foggy Bottom.

The Supreme Court - 1st and Maryland Ave., N.W. The nation's highest Court meets in this building. Open Monday-Friday from 9: a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Public lectures are conducted in the courtroom from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. when court is not in session. Metro Stop: Capitol South or Union Station.

The U.S. Capitol - Capitol Hill. Tours conducted daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 (Summer/Fall hours). beginning at the Rotunda. Closed Christmas, New Year's and Thanksgiving. The U.S. Naval Observatory - 34th and Massachusetts Avenue, NW. Tours are available on alternating Monday evenings from 8:30 pm until 10:00 pm, except on Federal holidays, weather permitting. Phone: (202) 653-1507.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial - Near the Lincoln Memorial. Henry Bacon Drive and Constitution Avenue., NW. Always open. Constructed of black granite to honor all Americans who served in the Vietnam War. As a special tribute to those who did not return, the names of more than 58,000 who gave their lives or who remain missing are inscribed in the Memorial's wall in chronological order. Metro Stop: Foggy Bottom.

The Washington Monument - On the Mall at 15th Street, NW. Open daily April through Labor Day from 8:00 a.m. to midnight, September through March from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone: (202) 426-6839. Metro Stop: Smithsonian.

The Washington Navy Yard - The Washington Navy Yard, was authorized by the first Secretary of the Navy, Benjamin Stoddert, in 1799. The Washington Navy Yard is the U.S. Navy's oldest shore establishment. This historic complex has become the ceremonial "Quarterdeck of the Navy." The yard is located at 9th & M Streets S.E. Ample free parking is available within the Navy Yard.

The Washington Visitor Information Center - (TOURIST CENTER) 1455 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. Open 9:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Saturday. Closed Sunday. Phone (202) 789-7038.

The White House - 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. Open Tuesday through Saturday. The National Park Service distributes the free public tickets from the White House Visitor Center on E Street at 15th Street. This is not the Visitor Pavilion on the Ellipse. Tickets are timed from 10:00 a.m. until noon, or earlier if the supply for that day is restricted. It is advisable to arrive early (and impossible to predict what time one should arrive to "guarantee" tickets). Limited Congressional tours are also available with 8 to 10 weeks advance notice. Please call my office to reserve tickets. Since the White House is occasionally closed for official events, it is recommended that visitors call in advance. Metro Stop: McPherson Square.

Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts - Virginia Route 7 near Vienna, VA. The nation's first national park for the performing arts offers opera, symphonic music, pop concerts, rock, folk, jazz and ballet. Concerts are given all winter in The Barn, which has 3509 indoor seats. The Filene Center has approximately 7,000 indoor/outdoor seats. Phone: (703) 255-1860.
