MORGAN COUNTY

Morgan County has much to offer both visitors and residents.  In Decatur, AL, one spot you don't want to miss is Point Mallard water park, home of the nation's first wave pool.  The park at Point Mallard also features a variety of other outdoor experiences, including three events: the Alabama Jubilee, the Spirit of America Festival, and the September Skirmish, a Civil War reenactment that takes place on Labor Day.

The Wheeler Wildlife Refuge spans 34,500 acres in the Tennessee Valley, with a major portion in Morgan County.  650,000 visitors every year come to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge to see the diverse wildlife, including the southern-most and Alabama's only significant concentration of wintering Canada geese.  While visiting the refuge, visitors can also take advantage of hunting, boating, fishing, hiking, bicycling and much more.

When in downtown Decatur, visit Delano Park, a historic greenspace that has been preserved by the City of Decatur.  The park was founded in 1877 when the well-known New York architect, Nathan Franklin Barrett, was selected to design Decatur, then called the "Gateway City," with a large park running through the town.  Carolyn Cortner Smith, Alabama's first licensed female architect, designed the stone structures in the park that were built by the WPA in the 1930's.

Morgan County has experienced great economic development in recent years.  It is now home to 200 industries, including many Fortune 500 companies.  Several industrial parks in Morgan County are prime sites for new companies: Mallard Fox Creek Industrial Park, State Docks Road Industrial Park, and the Hartselle Industrial Park.  Boeing chose Decatur for the location of its Delta IV plant in 1999.  The Boeing facility provided hundreds of good jobs for the people of Morgan County and continues to grow today.

One reason Morgan County is so competitive in development is its outstanding education opportunities, including Calhoun Community College. Calhoun offers its students 49 associate degree programs and 52 career/certificate programs.  The "School to Career" program at Calhoun helps students and businesses make connections between education and career.
