LAWRENCE COUNTY

Lawrence County is home to a number of important historical and recreational sites.  Pond Spring, The Wheeler Plantation, was the home of senior Confederate cavalry leader General Joe Wheeler, who later fought in the Spanish-American War.

Wheeler Dam, one of nine mainstream Tennessee Valley Authority dams, created the largest Tennessee River lake in north Alabama.  The dam was named after Joe Wheeler, who in 1898 introduced the first in a long series of bills for the development of Muscle Shoals that eventually led to the creation of TVA in 1933.  The construction of Wheeler Dam took 3 years and was completed in 1936.  The shoreline of Wheeler is home to Joe Wheeler State Park, two state wildlife management areas, two group camps, and 12 boat docks.

The beautiful Bankhead National Forest covers much of Lawrence County.  The Bankhead is Alabama's largest national forest with nearly 200,000 acres.  In addition to historical sites, it has many beautiful camping sites, large picnic areas, extensive hiking and horse trails, canoeing, and several cascading waterfalls.  Visitors can also hike, fish, camp and hunt in the Sipsey Wilderness area within the Bankhead - the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi.

In Jesse Owens' hometown of Oakville, Alabama, you can visit the Jesse Owens' Memorial Park and Museum honoring the Olympic gold medal winner.  Jesse Owens was the 1936 Olympic winner of 4 gold medals.  He is further honored with an annual 10k run in Moulton that attracts some of the top competitors in the world.

The Oakville Indian Mounds Park & Museum in Lawrence County centers around the discovery of a 1.8 acre ceremonial mound and a burial mound in the Oakville community of North Alabama. Research indicates the mound may be proven to be from the Woodland period of North America, making it one of the largest of its kind in Alabama.
